“I have seen prices from £12 to £30 per month, which feels quite a lot for what is basically four submissions a year.”

We hear this most. a landlord pricing up the software, OpenRent Community forum, 14 May 2026 — someone in the same position as you.

This is the editorial policy for MTD Answers only: one subject, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, written for the sole trader or landlord who has to work out what the rules mean for them tonight.

Where the rules come from

A rule on this site comes from HMRC, in HMRC's own words, on GOV.UK, starting from HMRC's guide to who has to use Making Tax Digital and when. These are the GOV.UK pages our answers cite, and they are the same pages our re-check script reads:

Two kinds of page lean on something else as well. The free software table is priced on each provider's own pricing page, with the time of every read printed beside the price, and HMRC's software finder is the list it starts from. The Self Assessment helpline, registration and bank details pages quote HMRC's own contact pages on GOV.UK, and each figure there names the page it was read from.

What we never treat as a source

We do quote people from public forums at the top of some pages, with a link to where they said it, because the question is easier to recognise in someone's own words. A quote shows the question. It is never the answer.

How a figure gets onto a page, and stays right

Independence

We are not HMRC and not tax advisers. We take no commission, no referral fee and no advertising, and we rank no software product. The paid products sold here, the survival kit and the readiness checklist (alone or in a bundle), are named on their own pages; every rule they rely on is free to read on the answer pages first.

Corrections

This is a small, family-run publishing project, not a firm. We're not accountants and nothing here is tax advice — it's published rules, in plain English, with the source and the date attached so you can check us. That's the whole offer.
